First International Náboj Physics Tournament in Ukraine

On November 7, 2025, the reading room of the Scientific Library of UzhNU hosted the first international team physics tournament for high school students Náboj Physics in Ukraine. The event became one of the key results of the international project "The Positive Charge of Physics Transfer by Non-Formal V4–Ukraine Learning", implemented by UzhNU with the support of the International Visegrad Fund.

The organization of the tournament became a logical continuation of the first stage of the project, during which the UzhNU team studied the experience of partner organizations from Slovakia, Czechia, and Poland regarding the organization of physics competitions and the development of non-formal education for youth. The knowledge gained during study visits and the developed materials were used to host the first Náboj Physics in Ukraine. The event was organized by the Department of Solid State Electronics and Information Security of the Faculty of Physics of UzhNU together with international project partners from the Visegrad Four countries.

The opening ceremony was led by the Head of the Department of Solid State Electronics and Information Security Vasyl RIZAK — Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, member of the American Physical Society, head of the Transcarpathian branch of the Ukrainian Physical Society, academician and head of the Transcarpathian center of the Academy of Technological Sciences of Ukraine. Welcoming remarks were also delivered by Mariana MARUSYNETS, Director of the Department of Education and Science, Youth and Sports of the Transcarpathian Regional Military Administration, Vasyl RUBISH, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Physics at UzhNU, Yelyzaveta SYNETSKA-KUSHYK, Manager of the International Visegrad Fund, and MSc. Jaroslav Valovčan, PhD, Chief Organizer of the Náboj Physics tournament from Comenius University.

The tournament was attended by 18 high school teams from institutions of general secondary education and pre-higher vocational education of the Transcarpathian region. After the rules were announced, the teams began solving tournament problems, the difficulty of which gradually increased. The competition format required not only thorough knowledge of physics, but also the ability to analyze information quickly, work in a team, effectively distribute roles, and make decisions under time pressure. This approach is a hallmark of non-formal education, combining the development of academic competencies with essential soft skills. An important feature was the active involvement of students and postgraduate students of the Faculty of Physics of UzhNU as volunteers, team coordinators, and technical assistants. This allowed not only ensuring high-quality organization, but also cultivating a student community of future physics tournament organizers in Ukraine.

Following the competitive part, an additional educational program was organized for participants. Students visited the interactive Science Museum of the Transcarpathian Branch of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, exploring demonstration exhibits and modern science popularization methods. For educators, workshops, demonstration experiments, guided tours of UzhNU physics laboratories, and a presentation of the Learning Hub "Charge of Physics" capabilities were held.

According to the results, the winner of the first Ukrainian Náboj Physics tournament was the team of the Uzhhorod Scientific Lyceum. Among the prize winners and top-performing teams were representatives of Lyceum "Leader" and Lyceum No. 3 of Uzhhorod, Mukachevo Secondary School No. 20, and Uzhhorod Trade and Economic College of SUTE. These results will serve as the basis for forming Ukrainian teams to represent our country at the international Fyziklání 2026 tournament in Prague. Thus, the best project participants get the opportunity to continue their journey in the European educational space and engage with the best non-formal physics education practices of the Visegrad Four countries.
