Non-Formal STEM Education in Action: Students of Irshava Lyceum No. 1 Visited UzhNU
As part of the activities of the Learning Hub "Charge of Physics", an educational STEM excursion to the Science Museum, Observatory, and faculty laboratories of UzhNU was organized for students of Irshava Lyceum No. 1. The event was joined by implementers of the international project "The Positive Charge of Physics Transfer by Non-Formal V4–Ukraine Learning", representatives of the Faculty of Physics and the Faculty of Mathematics and Digital Technologies of UzhNU, as well as the Transcarpathian Branch of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
The purpose of the meeting was to create an opportunity for schoolchildren to get acquainted with physics and modern technologies not only through theoretical knowledge, but directly through observation, practical demonstrations, and interaction with real equipment. This format corresponds to non-formal education approaches underlying the activities of the Learning Hub "Charge of Physics" and aimed at fostering youth interest in physics and STEM.
"The idea to organize such an excursion arose in response to the need to make physics and modern technologies closer and more understandable for schoolchildren. We wanted not just to talk about science, but to give students an opportunity to see it live – in laboratories, research centers, and in the operation of modern equipment. It was especially important to show that physics today is not only textbooks, but also drones, cybersecurity, astronomical observations, STEM projects, and much more," said Vasyl LOMAHA, physics teacher of Irshava Lyceum No. 1, who initiated the event. Teacher Serhiy KARABYNYOSH assisted in organizing and preparing the excursion.
Students were introduced to the operation specifics of the cyber range and the "Lybid" drone center, STEM education and "Jabil" electronics laboratories located at the Faculty of Physics of UzhNU. High schoolers also learned about astronomical observation capabilities at the Motrya Bratiychuk Space Research Laboratory. At the interactive Science Museum of the Transcarpathian Branch of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, lyceum students observed physical processes and phenomena studied in school physics in action and listened to insightful explanations from department head Anton BAHYN. Pavlo MULESA, Head of the Department of Cybernetics and Applied Mathematics, spoke about study programs at the Faculty of Mathematics and Digital Technologies.
A distinct part of the program was an open lecture for schoolchildren at the Faculty of Physics of UzhNU delivered by representatives of the international project working group, during which participants deepened their physics knowledge and understood the methodology for solving tournament problems. The lecture complemented the practical part of the excursion and showcased the potential of non-formal learning, where students can ask questions, discuss physical phenomena, and discover new fields of science.
The activities of the Learning Hub "Charge of Physics" provide opportunities for schoolchildren from different regions to join lectures, practical sessions, popular science events, excursions, and intellectual competitions. In particular, hub participants gain a unique opportunity to prepare for international physics tournaments Náboj Physics and Fyziklání, combining school studies with the experience of non-formal STEM education.
