Learning Hub "Charge of Physics" Promotes STEM Education
As part of the activities of the Learning Hub "Charge of Physics" established on the basis of Uzhhorod National University, an educational meeting was held with graduates of the Khust Multidisciplinary Lyceum named after Ivan Mahula. The event was organized within the framework of the international educational project "The Positive Charge of Physics Transfer by Non-Formal V4–Ukraine Learning", supported by the International Visegrad Fund under the Visegrad+ Grant program.
One of the important areas of the project is the development of non-formal physics education, the popularization of natural sciences among schoolchildren, and the involvement of youth in the modern STEM environment. The meeting combined cognitive, practical, and career-guidance elements, which is one of the key principles of non-formal STEM education. The program allowed students to see how physical knowledge is applied when working with real scientific instruments, technologies, and research equipment.
During the visit, the lyceum students visited the interactive science museum of the Transcarpathian Territorial Branch of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which features exhibits demonstrating various physical phenomena. Event participants were able to directly interact with exhibits, observe visual demonstrations of physical processes, and see that science can be not only informative, but also exciting and dynamic.
After visiting the interactive science museum, the students visited the observatory of the Motrya Bratiychuk Space Research Laboratory, where they gained insights into the fundamentals of astronomical observations and telescope equipment operation principles. Acquaintance with the laboratory equipment used for space object research sparked particular interest. The visited educational and scientific laboratory has a long history dating back to observations of artificial Earth satellites in Uzhhorod in 1957. Today, its equipment includes, in particular, telescopes with digital CCD cameras for astrometric and photometric research.
The main part of the meeting took place at the Faculty of Physics of UzhNU in the historical center of the city. High school students became acquainted with the modern infrastructure of the Department of Solid State Electronics and Information Security, in particular visiting the cyber range and learning about cyber threat modeling and training competition formats between "red" and "blue" teams. During the tour of the educational and research drone center, participants studied UAV operation technologies and practiced basic piloting elements. Special attention was paid to engineering practices: students saw additive manufacturing (3D printing) capabilities for prototyping, as well as a demonstration of an autonomous vehicle STEM platform utilizing sensor systems and automated navigation and obstacle avoidance algorithms.
As part of the Learning Hub "Charge of Physics" activities, representatives of the project working group delivered a popularization lecture for students on non-formal methods of studying physics, demonstrating practically oriented problems and their role in developing analytical thinking and preparing for intellectual physics tournaments. At the end of the meeting, the project leader, Head of the Department of Solid State Electronics and Information Security, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Vasyl RIZAK introduced the department's educational opportunities and modern study programs, inviting future applicants to join studies and scientific research in the fields of electronics, cyber security, and emerging technologies.
Organizing such educational events is an important component of the project implementation, aimed at expanding students' access to quality physics education, popularizing natural sciences, and supporting future participants in international physics competitions, in particular Náboj Physics and Fyziklání tournaments. Overall, the activities of the Learning Hub "Charge of Physics" foster an active educational community, develop youth interest in science, and deepen cooperation between schools, the university, and international partners in STEM education.
