Positive Charge of Physics: Studying V4 Experience in Non-Formal Education

In August 2025, the working group of the international project "The Positive Charge of Physics Transfer by Non-Formal V4–Ukraine Learning", implemented by Uzhhorod National University with the support of the International Visegrad Fund, successfully completed the first stage of the project, namely the Capacity-Building Program for the Project Team.

The working group is headed by the Head of the Department of Solid State Electronics and Information Security of UzhNU, Vasyl RIZAK — Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, member of the American Physical Society, Head of the Transcarpathian Branch of the Ukrainian Physical Society, academician and head of the Transcarpathian branch of the Academy of Technological Sciences of Ukraine. The team also includes teachers, postgraduate students, and students of the Department of Solid State Electronics and Information Security who work on implementing the best practices of non-formal physics education in Ukraine and organizing international student physics tournaments. The training program included a series of study visits and online meetings with partner organizations, studying the experience of the Visegrad Four countries in non-formal education, physics competitions, and STEM initiatives, as well as coordinating further joint events with partners from Slovakia, Czechia, and Poland.

During the visit to Comenius University in Bratislava, the project team analyzed the rules and format of the international Náboj Physics tournament, discussed opportunities for adapting the competition to Ukrainian conditions, taking into account wartime security requirements, and studied technical aspects of organizing competitions and operating the tournament's online platform. Special attention was paid to preparing promotional materials for the first Náboj Physics tournament in Uzhhorod, participating in developing and testing tournament problems, and exploring the activities of Fyzikálny Korešpondenčný Seminár, Physics Camps, and Akadémia Trojstenu as successful models of non-formal education for youth. During the meeting, Associate Professor of the Department of Solid State Electronics and Information Security Oleksandr CHOBAL presented the UzhNU team, core project objectives, implementation timeline, and perspectives of developing the Learning Hub "Charge of Physics" as a center for non-formal physics education in Ukraine.

The next stage was the scientific and educational program at the Faculty of Science of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice, where the Ukrainian team met with Vice-Dean doc. RNDr. Marián Kireš, PhD. During the visit, special attention was devoted to applying the Future Classroom Lab (FCL) concept, integrating blended learning into non-formal physics education, methodology of preparing school pupils for physics tournaments, involving undergraduate and postgraduate students in organizing school science competitions, and modernizing curricula in physics didactics.

As part of Output 1 implementation, an online meeting was also held between the project team, active students of the Department of Solid State Electronics and Information Security, task creators from the Trojsten student organization, and representatives of Gdańsk University of Technology, the first Polish organizer of the Náboj Physics tournament. During the meeting, partners shared experiences in adapting the tournament for Polish students and addressed organizational matters for hosting the first Náboj Physics tournament in Uzhhorod. Special emphasis was placed on joint research prospects, youth engagement in non-formal education, opportunities for ongoing collaboration between student communities of Ukraine, Poland, and Slovakia, participation in international conferences, and co-authoring scientific papers and learning materials.

The implementation of Output 1 marked an important step in transferring the best practices of the Visegrad Four countries to the Ukrainian educational sphere and building a new community of physics tournament organizers in Ukraine. The acquired experience will serve as the foundation for hosting the international team tournament Náboj Physics in Uzhhorod, developing instructional materials for tournament organizers across Ukraine, and expanding the Learning Hub "Charge of Physics" as an open platform for non-formal physics education for pupils, university students, and educators.
